Gordon Ramsay’s new opening has proved tantalising for the tabloids – David Beckham was at some point rumoured to be involved but in actuality it’s surprisingly unflashy, a decent urban drinking and dining space with a faintly New Yorky vibe and a somewhat out of the way Southwark location. Design-wise, it couples shiny parquet flooring and super-soft leather seats with more urban touches, exposed wiring and lots of wood and glass. Ramsay’s not in the kitchen of course don’t be silly but chef Davide Degiovanni is a capable stand in and his daily-changing menu of tasty Italian-inspired dishes is appealing in and of itself. Portion size can be on the mean size but the cooking is on the nose. Kick off your evening with a drink or two in the basement cocktail bar. Open from 5pm until late, it serves both classic and contemporary cocktails, many with a Mediterranean and Italian influence. The Southwark Angel is a refreshing mix of gin, raspberry, cucumber, Chartreuse and lemon, while the Unione is their version on the classic Italian spritz, the use of oregano bitters and rose prosecco giving it a bit of twist. There’s a range of grappa and other Italian spirits on offer and a decent list of wines grouped by style. Artisan cheeses, home-made pasta and well-sourced meat and fish feature on the food menu, with prices (comparatively) reasonable. All in all it’s one of the better contemporary Italians in London, though the Ramsay connection means you might struggle to get a table for a while – the bar may well be your best bet.
