Vivo is a smart new spot on increasingly rewarding Upper Street, several cuts above the chains that used to dominate this Islington artery. Ingredients are sourced from Italy and founders – brothers Will and Ben – have spent a good deal of time exploring the culinary traditions of the country and it shows. The handsome bar and restaurant, all oak and granite, boasts a special bakery section, plus a traditional Roman pizza oven. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming and they have a bumper Italian wine list full of interesting choices. They also offer a selection of cocktails and spritzes, including the Death in Florence, a blend of gin, Fiorente elderflower liqueur, chilli, lime and the Almond Cigar, a treat of a drink, featuring Bacardi Reserva, Amaretto Disaronno, lime, cinnamon stick, and orange peel. Food is all fresh and well executed and be sure to save room for dessert, maybe a traditional Sicilian cassata or a superior tiramisu. Negroni Wednesdays, designed to showcase the traditional Italian tipple, are another good reason to add this one to your list.
