Late Night Drinking
Ben's Canteen Earlsfield
London-South West London
May 11, 2018
The little sister to one of our favourite neighbourhood restaurants the deservedly popular Ben’s Canteen near Clapham Junction the new branch of Ben’s on Garrett Lane occupies the site of the former Willie Gunn. The pub has been transformed into a stylish white-walled space, with a buzzing bar at the front and a dining room in the back. An enamel cup of popcorn is provided as you peruse the drinks list the SW11 Collins is a long refreshing thing, ideal on a warm evening which this was the lemon spiked with fresh ginger. The Sloe Gin Spritz was similar zingy, a great aperitif. A lot of the Ben’s Canteen classics recur on the Earlsfield food menu. The hefty house burger and that near-legendary Scotch egg are both present and correct alongside a superior pulled pork sandwich, on the lightest of brioche buns, and a tempting range of tacos and flatbreads. The calamari chips were an unexpected favourite, impeccably fried and incredibly moreish. The sweet potato chips were also excellent and the wine list is well worth a look, with a number of well-chosen and affordable options by the carafe (always a plus in our books). If it’s anything like the original Ben’s this place will be heaving on weekends the coffee is spot-on and their brunch offerings are awesome and we’re stealing ourselves (and our stomachs) to try the mac’n’cheese version of their Scotch egg. Service is warm, friendly and considerate and the place already feels like an integral part of the neighbourhood.
