Every neighbourhood needs a place like Ben’s. Located in an otherwise fairly unexciting spot between Wandsworth and Clapham Junction, Ben’s is an atmospheric and easy-going bar and restaurant. A popular brunch spot by day, the drinks menu features a large range of Bloody Marys as well as a complex, refreshing Sloe Gin Negroni and a wonderfully tart Marmalade Martini. Best of all in our eyes (and on our palates) was a spicy chilli and vanilla concoction with a pleasant kick to it. It’s worth popping along on a Tuesday when they do a great 2 for 1 cocktail offer. They’re rightly famed for their burgers, which are well-sourced, well- made and epic in scale. If you’re feeling particularly filthy you could opt for the Sloppy Ben, a burger slathered with chilli con carne and cheese, or the Big Benny Melt, decadently topped with mac & cheese. Veggies should check out the mushroom and peach burger (it sounds odd, but it really works). The all-day breakfast scotch egg has developed something of a cult following and it’s worth saving room for dessert, particularly the brownie which comes topped with delicious salted caramel ice cream care of Gelupo. The room itself is fairly functional, though with a couple of nice design touches we really liked the word search on one of the walls food comes served in enamel dishes, and the service is friendly and relaxed. One thing that really makes this place stand out is the way they regularly play host to exciting one-off dinners and pop-ups – from the likes of Ben Spalding no less – as well as the street barista, Brewed Boy.
