Gremio de Brixton is a lively Spanish tapas bar, set in the vaults under St. Matthews Church in Brixton, London.

The majestic brick vaults under Brixton’s St. Matthews Church play host to this authentic tapas bar, which explores Spain’s regional flavours. Gremio de Brixton offers an enticing selection of tapas made with rustic, unpretentious style: these include English interlopers such as suckling pig with apple and pear mash alongside classic taverna favourites like croquetas and cured meats. And appropriately enough, there’s a distinctively Spanish flavour to the bar’s short and sweet menu of keenly priced cocktails too. These include Tio Jose, which blends sherry and lime juice, and a Ginger Mojito, made with mellow ginger-infused syrup. And for perfect pairing with the bar’s lively tapas menu, there’s also a wide choice of sangrias: the classic red wine refresher is joined on the menu by variants including Gremio Sangria, which features rose and rum, as well as the lavish White Sangria, made with cava, and topped with fresh blueberries and peaches. Every Friday and Saturday night, the bar’s resident DJ makes the brick vaults echo with Latin sounds, while mid-week live music nights coax patrons onto the dancefloor to enjoy salsa and Cuban soul. But the nightspot’s warren-like vaults mean there are also plenty of candlelit spots to sit back with a drink, and to enjoy a subterranean flavour adventure with real Spanish flair. Photo credit –
