On an otherwise unexciting stretch of Battersea’s Lavender Hill you’ll find Sugar Cane, an explosion of tiki kitsch by the same team behind Mayfair’s notorious Mahiki. Don’t come here expecting subtle. From the bamboo-bedecked entrance onwards, minimalism and understatement have no place here. There are banan leaves, statues, flowers and even appropriately tiki-tastic cocktail jugs. The cocktails themselves are tropical and colourful, sometime over sweet but not sloppily executed. The signature Goddess of Fire is a passion fruit based drink is served with visual flair. There’s a surprisingly wide-ranging selection of beers and wines too, even if the food offerings feel a bit like an afterthought. The pleasant patio comes into its own during the summer making this one of the area’s livelier bars.
