Stax Diner, the work of the lovely folk at Bea’s of Bloomsbury, home to a spiffing afternoon tea, quality cupcakes and the ‘duffin’, sees them expanding into American comfort food territory. Located in Kingly Court, the courtyard behind Carnaby Street which is fast becoming a foodie destination, boasting as it does the second London branch of Pizza Pilgrims. Stax is hip, bright spot, decked out in Formica, neon and raw wood. From their list of ‘hard’ shakes, you’ll want to try the Strawberry Blonde, which comes laced with roasted strawberry vodka, or – if you’re feeling particularly hardy – the Graceland, an epic mix of rum, peanut butter and banana. They also do a superb Mint Julep, the perfect thing to pair with the house burger, the shrimp po’boy, the fried green tomato ‘Whistle Stop’ sandwich or a plate of their glorious buttermilk-crumbed chicken and waffles. Brunch – with its brioche French toast, fluffy blueberry pancakes and zingy Mimosas – needs to be experienced.
