Having been a staple on the Soho liquor scene for a long time (50-plus years, to be exact), Milroy’s has added a new string to its bow. A speakeasy-style bar, if you want to call it that, entered via a bookcase in the bottle store at street level. Venture down the stairs and you’ll find a basement bar with understated decor (all brooding dark woods, exposed brick walls and shiny Chesterfield sofas) and an experimental cocktails list.
The Vault, as this new bar concept is known, is bijou in size but more than makes it for its lack of floor space with an interesting drinks menu that plays heavily on top-shelf whiskies (not surprising, given the shop it lies beneath). The whiskies used are from all over the world, and the cocktails are anything but run-of-the-mill, mixed with a conglomeration of homemade bitters, rinses and vinegars. A couple of our current favourites are the North by North North (17-year-old whisky, caramel, apple & lemon thyme bitters, salt, absinthe rinse and grapefruit zest) and the Queen Victoria (15-year-old whisky, red wine, red vermouth, cherry liqueur and Italian herbal aperitif). The Vault also offers a selection of seasonal cocktails that change every couple of months but are perfect for the non-whisky drinkers. Try the Echo Park (gin, ginger, saffron, fennel and honey) for a sweet-and-savory delight.
