The new venture from
the Marcus Wareing restaurant group, Tredwell’s is a more relaxed version of
the high end venues he’s best known for. Located in Covent Garden, on a St
Martin’s Lane space that’s housed a number of short-lived operations (anyone
remember Denim, no? Thought not), it’s a smart space with booth seating and
gleaming green tiles. Reasonably priced cocktails include the sweet Penny
Farthing, a mix of Olorosso sherry, goji berry, and blackberry, and a subtly
spiced Gunpowder Gimlet, which blends gin with cardamom, green tea, and lime.
The one we’re most intrigued by though, is the Coca Cado Retox, which mixes
vodka with avocado, coconut water, cucumber, and lime. On the food front
there are various things in jars and, of course, the ubiquitous small plates
with an emphasis on sharing. Some of these dishes are more creative than
others. We like the sound of the chargrilled chicken with peanut sauce, and cucumber
chutney, and the confit cod served with sweet potato, lemon and garlic. From
the list of desserts, our interest has been piqued by the pain perdu (French
toast essentially) which comes with maple cream and crispy bacon, but the
Muscovado sponge with coffee and walnut also sounds like our cup of tea (or,
indeed, coffee).
