The glorious art deco confection that is The Wellesley, a stylish Knightsbridge boutique hotel, occupies the former home of the late lamented Pizza on the Park, one of the capital’s best cabaret and jazz venues. Having been revamped by the team behind One Aldwych, music remains part of the package at the new venue, but this an altogether different set-up – there’s a £25 minimum spend per person, for example, and prices on the whole are very Knightsbridge. The inside/outside nature of the venue’s terrace bar, complete with fake topiary, makes it possible to smoke there – and the bar boasts the country’s biggest walk-in humidor in order to accommodate this, one containing the largest range of Cuban cigars in the UK apparently. The bar is well stocked and there are still jazz nights to soothe you as you sip. The hotel’s Jazz Lounge boasts a performance space for both up-and-coming and high-profile artists and a glorious grand piano completes the Jazz age scene. The Wellesley’s Crystal bar, meanwhile, is all mirrors, marble and gilt, with drinks made behind a small, bejewelled bar before being served on one of the two terraces. The venue is a little too polished and new at the moment, it lacks its predecessor’s ‘lived-in’ charm, but that can only improve over time
