Rum rules at La Descarga. Rum rocks. Created by the enterprising Houston twins (the guys behind Piano Bar), the bar specializes in vintage rum cocktails. Despite the Cuban-influenced décor, this is not a theme bar far from it, it’s more sophisticated than that. Drinks are taken very seriously and they serve forgotten classics like the Bad Spaniard, which includes a dash of condensed milk and egg yolk, alongside textbook daiquiris. They even run rum tasting sessions in the back bar where you can try rare and unusual kinds. Though rum and its complexities are at the heart of what they do, this is a lively, attractive bar, not a temple, and if rum’s not your thing you’ll still be well catered for. There are regular live music nights with bands playing salsa and Caribbean music and the whole place has a hip, exciting buzz about it.
