HOME, Manchester’s newest arts complex – a merging of the Cornerhouse Cinema and the Library Theatre – opened with some fanfare, a display of pyrotechnics and a rousing speech by Danny Boyle about the value of the arts. The space itself is – as the name suggests – open, airy and welcoming, yet also stylish. As well as theatre, gallery and cinema spaces, the venue also boasts three separate bar areas, including a buzzing downstairs bar and an upstairs café-bar serving creative cocktails as well as bar snacks, burgers and boards for sharing. You can munch on a pulled pork sandwich, Cajun-style chicken or a lamb kofte pizza or just share some Persian style mezze and a bottle of crisp white wine before taking in a film. The glass-fronted building is lovely and light and opens onto a bustling outdoor seating area when the weather allows. Come to see a show – which you should, because their programme is eclectic and exciting – or simply kick back with a cocktail and enjoy the atmosphere of the place. HOME is a vibrant space, full of art and life, and has already helped reframe Manchester’s rich cultural scene.
