Understatement and minimalism were clearly not the guiding principles behind the re-design of the Carlton Hotel. Clean lines and statement features cut no ice here. At the Carlton everything makes a statement from the flocked wallpaper to the Saturday Night Fever dance floor via the neon chandeliers and is that a stuffed peacock in the corner? Yes, it is; it’s like a little party in your retinas. It won’t appeal to everyone but as an antidote to the identikit urban design that has infiltrated bars the world over, it’s way out in front and should be applauded for doing its own thing (even if that thing is slightly barking). As for the venue itself? Well, this once notorious dive has been given a new lease of life. There’s a curved bar, a dining area serving decent bar grub and a pretty little decked area for the smokers. Drinks-wise, above average cocktails are on offer along with plenty of Australian and international wines.
