Jules Basement is a cool speakeasy-style space tucked away under taco joint in Mexico City’s Polanco neighbourhood. There’s something clandestine about the experience with visitors, once they’ve actually found the place, being let in through industrial cooler door and a set of rubber curtains. It’s exciting, it gives the place a real sense of adventure and discovery, Inside the space the cocktail tables take the form of large white skulls encased in glass and the walls are covered with black leather panels. It’s a striking space, all black and silver and white, modern and theatrical. The cocktail list features cool drinks like the Irish whiskey based Oscar Wilde and a Guatemala ‘Sazerac.’ Their take on the classic Negroni is laced with mezcal and their Edimburgo Reloaded pairs cassis with gin. If you’re feeling adventurous or indecisive you can always let the mixologist mix you a bespoke drink. The bar also serves a range of classic cocktails including dry, dirty and French martinis alongside artisanal Mexican beers, wines and Champagne. If you’re hungry, they have a charcuterie menu or tacos can be ferried down from the restaurant above. The bar stays open until 2am and a reservation is necessary, so be sure to book ahead.
