Originally intended as a speakeasy for people in the know – or people who knew how to make a reservation via its Facebook page – word soon got out about this unique bar. It’s not so secret these days, but still just as stunning. As the name suggests, Gin Gin specialises in that magical juniper-flavoured spirit, taking it far beyond the bog-standard G&T – although the classic gin cocktail is naturally treated with respect. Here you can sample some of the world’s finest gins in pure form, and also blended into some spectacular cocktails, including the Acapulco Golden – Bombay gin with mate – a traditional South American caffeine drink – Kalani licor de coco, pineapple and coconut water. If gin’s not your thing other spirits are available, including whisky, tequila and mezcal. The eye-catching interior features row upon row of bottles, stretching up to the ceiling high overhead, and surrounded by lush green plants that seem to grow straight out of the brick walls. In another darkened room the mysterious wall of skulls certainly provides a conversation starter. Music is provided by guests musicians and DJs and a bar menu is available, offering even more opportunities to try gin in new forms, with dishes like pulpo a la Hendrick’s – octopus marinated in paprika and a Hendrick’s vinaigrette.
