Suitably enough for a bar inspired by the speakeasies of the 1930s, everything is not quite what it seems at Parker Y Lenox.

Suitably enough for a bar inspired by the speakeasies of the 1930s, everything is not quite what it seems at Parker Y Lenox. For a start, to the casual passerby it is simply Lenox, an American-style diner serving up traditional New York fare such as onion rings, Waldorf salad and grilled cheese sandwiches. But venture a little further on, through the restaurant and down a darkened hallway, and you will emerge into Parker – a cocktail bar that pays homage to the glamour and glitz of the 1930s and 40s, complete with Gatsby-esque velvet chairs and gleaming chandeliers, and a long bar serving up an array of cocktails, spirits and wines. There are more than 30 cocktails on the list, with a strong emphasis on the classics. Favourites such as Mojitos, Martinis and Negronis are all as well executed as you would expect. This is a proper jazz joint too, with musicians playing live on the small stage almost every day and jazz, funk, soul and blues coming out of the speakers the rest of the time. And despite the sense of mystery around this hidden-away bar, there’s no elitism here – they don’t have a guest list, or even anyone on the door. All are welcome to wander in, have a cocktail or two and soak up the jazz era vibes.
