Yardbird Southern Table and Bar to give its full name. Blending considerable urban chic with a down-home vibe, Yardbird is a handsome spot, bedecked with quirky chandeliers and salvaged bits and pieces. The bar is bourbon central with over 75 choices, some pocket-friendly, some less so. Cocktails are mostly bourbon-based too. The Pork Chop pairs its bourbon base with cider, lemon, fresh thyme and a spoonful of Dijon mustard, to create a savoury-sweet mix that’s really exciting. The Blackberry Bourbon Lemonade, served in a dinky mason jar, is less complex but hugely refreshing, ditto the house Mint Julep. Their zingy twist on the Bloody Mary is also worth trying and there’s a well-priced wine list too if brown spirits aren’t really your thing. The food menu is inspired by the owner’s southern grandmother, and includes impeccable fried chicken served with Cheddar waffles and spiced honey. There are home-baked biscuits, house-cured bacon, fried green tomatoes, deviled eggs, Everglade frogs’ legs, mac & cheese, and shrimp & grits. The emphasis is very much on local ingredients here and as much as possible is sourced from local farmers and suppliers fresh Florida fish, seafood, pork, eggs, even alligator. Oh and be sure to save room for pie. You won’t regret it.
