L’Assommoir is a small local chain bar specialising in cocktails – they offer over 300 as well as wide range of tasty things to eat. The Notre Dame Branch is light and airy, with attractive décor, lots of warm wood, a winding staircase, an illuminated backbar – and a buzzing atmosphere. The lengthy cocktail list includes the Basil a Paris, a blend of Absolut, Chambord, fresh basil, raspberry and pepper, the Nuclear Freeze, a colourful mix of Absolut vodka, Bleu curaçao Marie-Brizzard, Luxardo Maraschino, lemon and tonic, and the Wibble, which mixes Gin Beefeater with cherry and passion fruit. There are cocktails here for all tastes, including those with sweet teeth. We like the sound of the Noisette Martini, a smooth, nutty blend of Absolut Vodka, Frangelico, and Amarula. The Food menu includes a range of Poutine – that classic Canadian dish – including one laced with whisky, as well as other tasty things, cheeses, charcuterie, and an epic bison burger. There’s a generous happy hour offer between 5pm and 7pm too. You’ll barely make a dent in the drinks list on a single visit, all the more reason to plan return visits.
