In English its name translates as Expedition and this unusual restaurant boasts a rescue helicopter as part of its distinctive décor. Celebrating the food of Siberia and the Arctic regions of Russia, the concept was inspired by a real-life adventure by the owners, who got lost on a Siberian trek and had to wait for a search and rescue helicopter to fly them to safety. They used this potentially disastrous experience as the spur to create a unique drinking and dining space that foregrounds the food of Russia’s northern reaches. As well as the helicopter, parts of the restaurant have been made over to resemble a traditional hunting lodge and there’s even an open air ‘meadow’ on the roof to enjoy on warmer evenings. The menu included infused vodkas from refreshing cranberry to nasal passage-clearing horseradish and plenty of ridiculously fresh fish, flown in daily from Lake Baikal in Siberia. The house speciality sees seafood and fish served frozen on large blocks of ice. It’s a pretty thrilling experience, very theatrical in its presentation (with the prices to match). For dessert there is pine cone and cloudberry jam and special Siberian tea. There’s live Russian music on some evenings and the place is popular with deep-pocketed Muscovites eager to try something new.
