The seriously smooth Bar Tonique is somewhat smarter than the average French Quarter bar. The sexy younger sister of Delachaise, it exudes confidence and sophistication. Inside its all cream-coloured leather and candlelight, and there’s a serious drinks list of classic cocktails made with the best ingredients: they only use fresh juices and they make their own infused tonic waters they even cure their own maraschino cherries. There’s an evident commitment to the details that extends to the wine list where there are lots of tempting and unexpected options by the glass. The crowd is relatively relaxed and the music smooth, if rather inoffensive. The prices are high for the area and though it’s a bit too polished for some; it’s a welcome antidote to the Bourbon Street chaos.
