The renowned Carousel Bar is a classic piano bar in many regards but with a literal twist. Frequented by Hemingway, Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams, the centre piece is a revolving bar if you opt to perch on one of the barstools and you’ll start spinning before you’ve even sunk your first drink. One of three lounges at the French Quarter’s elegant Monteleone Hotel, it attracts a colourful crowd, local regulars and out-of-towners alike. Though slightly touristy the drinks are better than you might expect and the counter-hopping staff are on the ball. The décor is endearingly retro, heavy on the blues and greens, but the Big Easy atmosphere is the thing that really sells it.
