Replacing the elegant neighbourhood favourite Governor which was wrecked by Hurricane Sandy, Atrium is an attractive new DUMBO space with a vertical garden spread over one which gives a verdant outdoorsy feel to an otherwise cavernous and faintly industrial space. It also boasts an epic wine list, with over two hundred selections, and an inventive food menu full of tasty and creative dishes. A network of exposed vents and ducts hangs over an array of dark wood tables and benches with extra seating spread across a mezzanine level. Owner Laurent Kalkotour grew up in Provence and this influence is evident in the menu which features dishes like a melting octopus carpaccio with fennel and olives. Southern European flavours abound and this influence is carried through to the downstairs bar area which features a cocktail list including creation like the Olive Oil, an unexpectedly but rather pleasingly savoury mix of sherry, sea salt and extra virgin olive oil. The Toast and Marmalade a blend of pumpernickel-infused cognac, orange marmalade, fresh lemon juice, house-made black tea simple syrup, and orange bitters is like breakfast in a glass and the Raspberries and Balsamic, as the name suggests, sees fresh raspberries muddled with balsamic vinegar syrup, and the resulting mixture mixed with Bols genever, IPA and raspberry gomme syrup. We definitely like the sound of that. Photography: Vanessa Bahmani
