Some trends you can see coming, others take you by surprise we’d never have guessed quite how big shuffleboard would become among the city’s hipsters, but there you have it. The Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club in Gowanus is a warehouse-sized space with a retro, Florida vibe which is dedicated to shuffleboard, the first venue of its kind in New York. The game, still associated with cruise ships of old, has been given the requisite room, the vast bar dominated by the game. Even so you may have to wait a while for your turn; it’s worth coming early if you’re serious about getting a few games in (and a lot of people here are really serious about the game there are league nights and weekend playoffs), though if you’re content to sink a few drinks while watching others at play it makes a great venue for doing that too. They stock a lovely line in light summery drinks, including the Shuffleboard Bob, laced with coconut water and cucumber. There are bingo nights and food comes care of food trucks housed inside the building (yes, it’s that big).
