The Way Station
New York City-Brooklyn
May 11, 2018
Here’s one for the Doctor Who fans out there. This endearing Brooklyn bar has a Tardis for a bathroom and a cocktail menu that continues the sci-fi theme. You can choose from the Whovian list, which features a Captain Jack Captain Morgan’s, Jack Daniels and coke – or from the libations list, which includes concoctions such as the Shirley Temple of Doom Makers Mark bourbon, grenadine and ginger ale.
Named for a fantasy novella by Stephen King, the bar has been suitably steampunked with a mish mash of Victoriana. The room is fitted out with fleur de lis wallpaper and red tufted banquettes, while archaic clocks and other mechanical curios adorn the walls. The beer list is small, but the cocktails are potent and well-made and the place clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a great place to hang out, relaxed (they don’t mind if you want to pose with the Tardis) yet lively; they sometimes play host to live music, and book readings and a regular burlesque night are also held on the tiny wedge of a stage at the back of the room.
The packed calendar of events also features beer tastings, film screenings, and nerd karaoke. And be sure to check out the sweet Doctor Who murals in the bathroom before you leave. You don’t have to be a diehard Dr Who fan to enjoy The Way Station, though underneath all those sci fi trappings it’s just a good honest bar full of people out to have a good time.
