New York City-Brooklyn

The Zombie Hut may be small, but it is arguably the best Tiki bar in Brooklyn. Not that there’s much competition, but this compact, colourful night spot would be a blast in any location. Decked out in the obligatory fashion with Polynesian masks and other trinkets, nicely complemented with an abundance of bamboo from floor to ceiling, it’s a lively space, kitsch and laid back. They even have a tropical fish tank. The drinks here, ironically decked out with paper umbrellas and plastic stirrers, are notoriously strong (particularly the eponymous Zombie) and can be overly sweet. If you like to share, the Scorpion Bowl or Frozen Zombie which comes with a surprise shot in the straw – will get four people nicely tanked up for $26. And if neon bright drinks aren’t your favourite poison, there’s a choice of reasonably priced beers on offer too. This is not in any way a nu-tiki joint a la Painkiller, but more of an old school affair, dedicated to rum, fun and abandon. The bar’s a prime spot for singles to mingle and those who have struck lucky can often be found making out on the couches at the back of the room. On week nights the powerful drinks and friendly bar staff create a welcoming neighbourhood vibe. Weekends can get a bit more full on as a hard partying crowd flocks here for some serious drinking and the rather predatory singles scene, all accompanied by the soundtrack of 90s music.
