Mar's

Remaining a bit of a secret during the early part of its existence, the word is definitely out on Mar’s now, and what a words are being bandied about. People say it is a throwback, they comment that the gastropub menu is exquisite and that the cocktails are divine, they write that the whole place is romantic and feels as though it’s from another time. And they are all right. They do so many things well here, it’s hard to know where to start. Mar’s declares that they provide “honest food and a place to gather”, and while we appreciate their simple messaging, they are understating things just a tad. The dinner menu is heavy on succulent seafood choices like shrimp cocktail, fried oysters, lobster rolls, and traditional moules frites, but they also are famous for the land-based Tuscan kale salad with avocado, pickled egg & ricotta salata and a golden-roasted half chicken. Cocktails are the icing on the cake, and they are constructed with all the precision you would expect, along with some unique flavors you might not; like the Blood Moon – premium tequila, cassis, lemon juice, ginger beer, and bitters – Mar’s Manhattan – premium bourbon, Italian liqueur, premium calvados, and locally-made fig bitters – and Gibraltar – premium American vodka, French elderflower liqueur, and cardamom bitters – in addition to sensational seasonal tipples and brunch quaffs. Yes, if you’ve ever wondered what life was like at Mar’s, rest assured, it’s fantastic. Photo credit: https://www.facebook.com/MarsAstoriaNYC
