Margaux is the gorgeous new bar and restaurant at the Marlton Hotel in Greenwich Village. When we say gorgeous we’re not kidding, this is a seriously sexy space, with its herringbone floors and green leather banquettes, its low golden lighting. A hip young crowd come here both to drink and dine, and it’s particularly popular with media types. There is a bustling bar area at the front and a handsome restaurant area at the back, with something of a Minetta Tavern vibe. The lobby area has waitress service and a welcoming fireplace in front of which you can sit and sip your drink (particularly appealing on bitter New York winter nights). The cocktails are classic rather than innovative, but this is the kind of place which demands a classic Don Draper kind of drink, rather than something envelope-pushing, a gin martini made well or a potent Old Fashioned. Food-wise, we’re all talking classics: lamb chops, a rib-eye to share.
