The Greenpoint sibling of stylish East Village drinking spot Elsa is slightly more contemporary than its older sister. There’s a lot here that’s bang on trend – barrel-aging, of course, and potent frozen drinks care of the slushie machine. There are cocktails on tap too (another box ticked). Owned by Natalka Burian, Scott and Jay Schneider, the bar makes a lot of its own syrups and infusions in-house (tick, tick). Cocktails include A Spoken Era a bright, zingy mix of vodka, cranberry-vanilla reduction, citrus bitters and sage – and the Self Portrait, a exciting-sounding mix of cilantro, chili, tequila, agave and lemon. We also like the sound of the Boxer Beetle (nice hip literary reference there), an aromatic concoction of blackberry bourbon, house-made Grenadine, lemon, and allspice dram laced with rosemary. There’s table-service on the balcony over the bar and the small alcove at the back, and there’s a small range of bar bites, including meat-and-cheese platters, to stop the booze going straight to your head. The décor is also of the moment, the clean white walls offset with lots of salvaged wood old New Jersey boardwalk in fact – giving the place a warm yet modern vibe.
