Holiday Cocktail Lounge
New York City-Lower East Manhattan
May 11, 2018
This classic New York dive closed its doors in 2012 but now it’s back, under the same name and occupying the same spot on St. Marks Place. And even though the management has changed, they’ve retained enough of the bar’s character and atmosphere to keep those who knew it back in the day happy. This bar has quite a history – Allen Ginsberg once drank here – and they’ve kept the old horseshoe-shaped counter and the wooden phone booth and the mural which date back to the space’s earlier days as a cabaret bar. They’ve even hung on to the tatty red awning out front. Barbara Sibley, who runs nearby Mexican joint La Palapa, is responsible for updating this pace for modern tastes, while holding on to some off its rough charm. Now the drinks list is much improved, full of modern twists on classic drinks, and they also serve a range of gourmet bar snacks to pair with your liquid fix. They also offer an $8 beer and shot combo – because some things shouldn’t change.
