New York City-Lower East Manhattan
May 11, 2018
This compact underground cocktail bar has been put together by a crack team ‐ including David Kaplan and Alex Day, formerly of Manhattan “it” bar Death and Co ‐ and is pitched as a late night drinking den for bartenders coming off shift from elsewhere. So you know this is a place for drinkers who know their stuff. Located just below Schapiro’s ‐ another fine cocktail destination ‐ the space is small but stylish, with Art Deco lamps, exposed brick walls and comfy leather banquettes. The cocktail list is extensive, witty and creative. There’s a section to suit every mood and time of the night ‐ from Aperitifs and Shorties to Firewaters (for “slow sippers”) and of course, Nitecaps ‐ to slow things down and “ease into the end of the night”. There are a few wordsearches and quizzes scattered throughout the menu too ‐ something to keep you amused as you peruse the cocktails or wait for your drink to be poured. And there’s a good old‐fashioned honour bar ‐ pick a bottle from a selection of spirits including whiskies, brandies and tequilas and pay for what you drink. A tempting but potentially dangerous proposition at the end of a long night, or day. Parties of eight or more can book ahead, but for smaller groups it’s first come first served.
