North End Grill
New York City-Lower East Manhattan

Danny Meyer’s new bar and grill in Battery Park is pretty spectacular. The bar area boasts a wall of scotch bottles and the short but intriguing cocktail list contains a range of cocktails featuring the amber spirit, including the Scotch Bonnet. Mercifully, this is a concoction free of the famously fiery chillies, instead consisting of a rather more palatable mix of scotch, Lillet Blanc, lavender honey, and lemon juice. If, however, you like the idea of a drink with a kick try the Kachumber Kooler, a blend of gin, cucumber, cilantro, and green chilies, with a generous splash of lime. The spacious room is all sumptuous white tablecloths and reclaimed wood, with large black and white photos lining the walls. There’s a state of the art open grill by the kitchen and the food here is as accomplished as the drinks, making it a popular venue for neighbours Goldman Sachs to hold their client dinners. The kitchen is run by Floyd Cardoz, previously of Tabla and known for his flair for flavour. Many of the fresh ingredients come from North End’s very own roof garden and the chef makes daily trips up the 17 storeys to harvest fruit and veg – such as beets, for the gingered kale, spinach, mustard and beets salad, and squash blossom for the squash blossom tempura with cotija and sriracha mayonnaise as well as a range of herbs. Service is cheerful, possibly even verging on eccentric, ensuring that everyone leaves with a smile on their face.
