Otto’s Shrunken Head
New York City-Lower East Manhattan

This punky Hawaiian-style dive bar is oddly popular with a tattooed rock’n’roll crowd. It’s a bright, colourful, chintzy kind of place where drinks come in novelty tiki mugs (which you can buy should you wish) and the bartenders get through an awful lot of paper umbrellas. Dried grass dangles from the ceiling and there are loads of vintage Hawaiian record albums and paintings dotted around the walls. There’s a photo booth in the corner and a little stage area where local bands play most nights of the week. The cocktails are potent and pretty well-made; they do a punchy version of the Mai Tai, a smooth Singapore Sling, a kick-ass Zombie, and an even punchier Volcano Blast – a kind of vast flaming punch designed for sharing. There’s a range of frozen drinks too, which are particularly popular – including a coconut and banana concoction for the sweet of tooth – and they also have a great range of reasonably priced beers, ranging from $3 to $6.
