New York City-Lower East Manhattan
May 11, 2018
The brainchild of the duo behind the popular Fat Radish on the Lower East Side, this new Orchard Street oyster bar and cocktail den has a homely, laid-back vibe. The room is deliciously vintage, complete with an ‘old-timey’ piano (which gets a good work out and is not just for show), Airstream copper bar, a dansette record player, a set of shelves laden with books and records and a selection of rather battered benches and tables on which to perch. Despite its newness everything feels lived in: the paint and plaster flakes and a dart board hangs on the raw white wall. There are plenty of good things to eat and drink here too. A small but thoughtful cocktail list includes a refreshing cucumber-spiked julep and an awesome-sounding toasted almond White Russian as well as a good range of local beers and champagne sourced from smaller producers. The food menu features an abundance of East and West Coast oysters, plus a few shareable plates, including a decadent mussel pot pie. The beaten-up décor and unfussy atmosphere makes this a great place to hunker down with a drink or three, especially when the piano is being put to good use.
