The Third Man
New York City-Lower East Manhattan
May 11, 2018
Named after one of the best film noirs ever made, Carol Reed’s The Third Man, this new Austrian flavoured bar is the work of the team behind nearby Edi & The Wolf. The bar boasts a menu of craft (sorry, “chef-driven”) cocktails alongside a selection of tasty small plates. The candle-lit space is decidedly European in décor, with comfy green banquettes and lots and lots of wood and wrought iron (as well as some judiciously placed cotton plants in honour of Joseph Cotton). Orson Welles also gets his props. The drinks list includes creative concoctions like the Harry Lime Punch, a mix of mezcal, green chartreuse and maraschino as well as the Puebla Guillermo, a variant on the Manhattan made from bourbon, Cynar and Fernet Branca. If it’s nippy outside you may want to sample one of their warming ‘hot tails’. There’s an excellent wine list and the food menu contains plenty of well-sourced cheeses as well as other upmarket bar nibbles. Smoked speck and fluke ceviche are also on the menu alongside their signature pumpkin seed spread but it’s the drinks that take pride of place here. Bitters and cordials are all made in house and the staff are knowledgeable and passionate. All this and not a cuckoo clock in sight.
