This new outdoor oyster-and-cocktail bar is based on the Sherman Zwicker, a cool wooden boat docked at Pier 25 at Hudson River Park, the “last original saltbank fishing vessel in existence” apparently. With its yellow-and-white striped awnings there are few more summery spots in the city, not ones with such glorious views of the Freedom Tower and Statue of Liberty at any rate. Once you’ve got you’re sea legs – this may take a while, the water can get surprisingly choppy given the proximity to the ocean – you’ll want to dive straight into the cocktail list. Drinks include the Whiskey Flash, a light fruity fix of bourbon, lemon, and pineapple, and the Sherman’s Cup made with white wine, berries, lemon, lime, and orange. A refreshing Negroni Sbagliato, made a generous splash of Prosecco, is another good bet. There’s also a menu of oysters and small plates to choose from, along with a superior wine list if you fancy a glass of something crisp to go with your bivalves. It’s a popular spot and there are no reservations, so get there early to grab a seat at the oyster bar or one of the surrounding tables, otherwise staff can take your phone number and text you when your table comes up.
