Late Night Drinking
New York City-Lower West Manhattan

The Taj Lounge is a sexy, Indian-influenced restaurant-bar where the beautiful people drink designer cocktails and dine on imaginative New American dishes inflected with Indian spices and flavours: ever tried pan-roasted lobster with basmati rice? How about Tandoori Red snapper with mushroom ghee? The design is just as exotic. It’s a sultry, sumptuous lounge furnished with Indian sandstone statues, large half-moon banquettes, a mahogany bar and teak screens. The moody lighting gives a gorgeous glow to it all (making it the perfect place for a romantic date, especially if you’re still at the stage where you haven’t yet seen one another in the harsh light of the morningß-) It’s hard to say who’s more beautiful: the A-list regulars or the staff in their sleek black uniforms. While offering plenty of variety, the dinner menu is a little short on vegetarian options compared to a standard Indian restaurant, so veggies might be a little disappointed. The venue also does a delicious brunch buffet on the first Sunday of every month (cornmeal crusted catfish fritters or brioche French toast, anyone?) The drinks meanwhile are exquisite: dashing barmen mix up cool signatures such as the Champagne Martini and the cucumber-infused Mojito (though our choice would be the appropriately named Indian Summer, a too-tasty blend of tequila, agave nectar, kamareene and spicy pepper). There are also wines available by the glass and bottle, though the selection isn’t extensive. Taj Lounge hosts a number of events, including Salsa classes on a Monday night. The place can get very busy and the prices certainly aren’t bargain basement, so it’s not the place to go for a cheap and chilled night out, but for a memorable evening it’s definitely the right destination.
