The Vig Bar
New York City-Lower West Manhattan
May 11, 2018
The Vig is a cool, classy lounge bar with long, low sofas and intimate booths, ideal for illicit liaisons. With a clientele that favours intimacy, low-key elegance, and a well-mixed cocktail, the bar provides a welcome enclave from the pretentious crowds often to be found congregating in the surrounding downtown neighbourhood of Nolita. The sleek, Art Deco-inspired interior makes for a timeless, classic vibe. In the front room, flashes of Royal blue and gold are set against mahogany wood, with plush velvet ottomans, tucked away booths and almond shaped tables creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere. A stroll through to the back room reveals candlelit tables, red velvet curtains and black leather sofas, perfect for a snug drink with a date. Decent prices and friendly staff add to the laid back vibe. The cocktail menu boasts both classics and creative offerings, such as the French 06, a sweet and sparkling pear and prosecco concoction. And while it’s popular as an after work drink destination, the bar also has a reputation for great music from its regular DJs as the night gets going. The name ß-Vigß- comes from the slang term for the interest paid to a loan shark, and apparently local Mafioso types occasionally turn up for a Scotch. But, despite this edgy touch, you’re more likely to find canoodling couples conducting discreet affairs over Manhattans in the darker recesses on weeknights, while on weekends the music goes on, inhibitions fly out of the window and The Vig goes party mad.
