Located a few blocks east of the buzz of Time Square, the Lantern’s Keep is the name of the elegant new bar at the Iroquois, a hip boutique hotel. It’s easy to miss this place, as there’s no indication of its existence at street level, but once you’ve found it, you’ll encounter a cozy cocktail’salon’ (their term), a haven from the outside grind.
Taking as its inspiration the Parisian salons of the nineteenth century, the room abounds with blue velvet and marble and the walls are decked out in Degas prints. Head bartender Theo Lieberman has based his cocktail list on the drinks popularized by the American bartenders who left the US in the wake of Prohibition, among them the Boulevardier, a potent blend of bourbon, Campari and sweet vermouth.
