New York City-Midtown Manhattan

This trendy and sophisticated bar is located on the ground floor of the Affinia Hotel and boasts a prime position just moments from Madison Square Garden. The eminent critic Aisha Hasanovic recently named it as one of Manhattan’s 100 best bars, and Niles certainly deserves all the praise heaped upon it. From their unusual illuminated red and geometric cube interior to their Bellinis (arguably the best outside Venice) Niles can’t be faulted. A cursory perusal of the leather-bound wine-list (with its Champagnes and Burgundies) tells you unequivocally that this is the place for the movers and shakers of New York, and it attracts plenty of out-of-towners too. The clean, iridescent finish accentuates a huge rectangular bar with seating all around and anchored by an illuminated decorative glass column, which provides a dramatic greeting for guests as they enter. Look out too for the novel multi-coloured lampshades, a minor feature perhaps but a perfect addition to a well-nigh perfect place. Popular with the 5 o’clock Penn Station commuters, who hit the bar’s happy hour for a quick after work sharpener before the train ride home, the crowd’s pretty lively here most nights. And on concert and game nights at nearby Madison Square Garden it steps up a pace. On these nights the bar often goes into overtime, making it the place for a game before and after the game. Just watch what you say about the Knicks or the Rangers, as you’re likely to be rubbing shoulders with some die-hard New York sports fans.
