The Bar Room at the Modern
New York City-Midtown Manhattan
May 11, 2018
A museum as famous as New York’s MoMA requires a suitably stylish bar and restaurant; a cup of tepid tea and a pre-packed sandwich were never going to cut it on the catering front. So when they reopened in 2005, MoMA brought in Danny Meyer, the man behind, amongst his many projects, the rightly renowned Union Square Café, to create The Modern. The results are impressive on many levels. The chef is one Gabriel Kreuther, a man who knows a thing or two about dazzling the taste buds. The menu in the Bar Room concentrates on small plates – so those who want the full multi-course experience should head next door to the main dining area but even in this more causal setting the food is memorable. The Bar Room has a cosmopolitan vibe and boasts a dizzyingly long wine list as well as some intriguing cocktails. Location and execution are perfectly paired: this is the bar as work of art.
