La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels
New York City-Upper Manhattan
May 11, 2018
The New York City edition of Paris’ renowned wine bar La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels, the Big Apple’s version has set the town’s Francophiles and wine lovers aglow since its 2014 opening. Stepping into La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels, feels like the end result of being whisked away to a boulevard near the Champ Elysees. Low candlelight, dark woods, brickwork, and a myriad of marble touches bring a sophisticated, yet comfortable, Parisian air to the space. Wine is the star of the show at La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels, and at last count, the venue is stocking bottles into the hundreds. As you would expect, a majority of the labels are from France (each and every region being well-represented), but finds from all over the wine-producing world are also stocked, destined to surprise even the most veteran of vine enthusiasts.
In addition to the expertly-picked wine list and a staff adept at making just the right recommendation, La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels separates itself from the pack with a state-of-the-art wine cabinet-slash-dispenser. This gem allows up to sixteen bottles to stay fresh for over two weeks, thus allowing the bar to offer extraordinary wines by the glass that you just aren’t going to see offered at other wine bars. The food here is fantastic too, with snacks like Tuscan Kale (served with shaved beet and hazelnuts) and mains like Burrata with white asparagus, kumquat, and pistachio just the tip of the tasty offerings. Brunch is also a big deal with a handful of delicious day-starters like the I L’ouef New York – slow-poached eggs, pastrami on rye bread, sherry sabayon – teamed up with mimosas and bellinis who get their bubbles from champagne.
