New York City-Upper Manhattan

Pitched as a waterfront resort in the heart (sort of) of Manhattan, La Marina boasts simply stunning views of the Hudson River and the city. Perched right on the water’s edge, this spacious, stylish venue combines a handsome bar and restaurant with its very own stretch of sandy beach so you can get that vacation vibe without all the hassle of getting on a plane. There are three bars to choose from, or you can book a table in the quieter lounge for a more intimate setting. The décor is fairly simple, opting for beachcomber shabby chic – think exposed rafters, rigging and lots of wood which is a wise choice since no amount of flash decoration can compete with views like these. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating and has an imaginative menu on offer, courtesy of chef Pierre Landet. The classics are also done very well so worth a try, with steak frites or mussels a popular choice. With abundant open air seating, it’s the perfect place to sip a fruity frozen cocktail or a freshly shucked oyster and watch the sun set its sprawling size means that even when it gets busy it doesn’t feel crowded. The venue plans to expand, with boat slips and moorings coming this summer to add a truly nautical air. It may be a bit out of the way but that’s part of the charm, and the views and atmosphere make it more than worth the journey out there on the A train. (Though do check its website before you set out: due to its vulnerable position, La Marina got hit badly by Hurricane Sandy and is currently closed through till spring 2013 for repairs).
