Now that drinks are officially allowed in New York’s movie theatres a night at the cinema is an even more exciting proposition. Brooklyn’s Nitehawk Cinema proudly declares itself its role in pushing for the overturn of the New York State law that made serving alcohol in movie theatres illegal, helping to usher in the dawn of a new era of boozy cinema-going. And having made it happen it has fully embraced the possibilities, serving a tempting New American menu so you can enjoy a leisurely dinner before the film, as well as a range of craft brews and cocktails to drink during. To ensure that the drinking doesn’t disturb the movie viewing, guests are provided with paper and pencils at their seats just scribble down your order at any point during the show, post it up in front of you, and a server will come and pick it up. Also on offer are gourmet nibbles that leave the traditional movie-house bucket-o-popcorn in the shade. Witty film-and-drink pairing means you can enjoy a special daiquiri with that screening of The Rum Diaries or a bottle of Presidente beer with The Ides of March. And while the novelty of drinking legally while taking in a film may be the main attraction of this place, the downstairs bar is worth a visit in itself. Decked out with burnished metal and leather booths, there’s a friendly neighbourhood atmosphere, with couples enjoying a drink before their show starts and others in just to check out the buzz.
