The Shanty, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is a gin lover’s dream. Owned by Tom Potter, a founder of Brooklyn Brewery, and spirits expert Allen Katz it comes with an impeccable CV. The bar is an annex of the New York Distilling Company, which produces two types of gin and will soon start producing Rock and Rye liquor a dangerous combination of whiskey and rock candy. There’s a working still at the back of the bar and their gin-based cocktails are superbly well crafted. Try The Acerbic Mrs. Parker, made with their own Dorothy Parker gin along with lemon and hibiscus syrup. Alongside the citrusy, floral Dorothy Parker gin they also produce Perry’s Tot, a spicy and intense gin, which measures in at an eye-popping 114 per cent proof. Or if gin’s not your thing try the Lonesome Hero, a grown up blend of rye, cherry liqueur and the Czech herbal bitters. The space is low-lit and handsome in a utilitarian way, and visible through the picture windows on the bar’s back wall is the still itself. During the day the huge shiny copper and steel contraption industriously transforms grain into gin, while at night it becomes an imposing part of the decor. They stock a small range of craft beers too – there’s even the option of pairing them with a pink gin chaser. Finger food along the lines of flavoured nuts and cheeses provides some solid sustenance, and between 5 and 7pm from Mondays to Thursdays there are tours around the distillery itself.
