Situated in Ménilmontant, the Gossima Ping Pong Bar is something of a first, in Paris at any rate, though it’s clearly been inspired by similar bars in New York. Owned by a former Ping Pong champion, it’s a cavernous space – a garage in a former life concrete-floored but stylish with it, spread over two floors, streaked with neon and peppered with cool retro chairs. It needs to be big because the main draw here is the array of table-tennis tables which you can rent by the half hour (this is cheaper before 6pm). It’s more than just a gimmick, people come because they really enjoy the game, and there’s something fun about having a couple of rounds with friends in tow. The emphasis is very much on the social aspect, not on the competition, the winning. That said, if you’re indifferent to ping pong this may not be the place for you, because while you don’t have to play, the drinks they do a decent range of beer, even a few well-made cocktails are on the pricy side and the noise of bouncing of balls in the background can get a bit irritating. However if you’re looking for a quirky alternative night out, it definitely fits the bill it’s hip, a bit different, and there’s dancing later in the evening too on weekends.
