Paris-Bastille and the Marais

This playful, popular bar doesn’t take itself too seriously. The former wine bar has been turned into a New York style American bar: you know the deal, you’ve drank in bars like this before. Think bare brickwork and a whole lot of wood, a caged in stairwell and bold, bright street art on the wall. Yes, there are Chesterfields, yes, there’s a soundtrack of hip hop and electro. Le Calbar has an edge of silliness here that is pleasing and fresh though. The bartenders don’t tend to wear trousers for one thing. The whole thing feels a bit self-deprecating and, well, fun. The cocktails are quality though, premium spirits and fresh ingredients, and they stock a good range of whiskeys, aperitifs, spirits and wines. The food menu includes sandwiches, cheeses and charcuterie, and while there’s no happy hour there is a monthly cocktail offer that once more involves the losing of trousers – it’s a running theme here, clearly.
