Paris-Bastille and the Marais

Sherry Butt is the latest venue to be spawned indirectly at least by the mighty ECC empire, with its owners hailing from the Curio Parlour and Prescription respectively. The space has a pleasingly airy lounge bar feel, simple but stylish; bare stone walls, wooden flooring and comfy velvet chairs, the drinks menu chalked on a board behind the bar. Dim lighting and lots of cosy corners make it a perfect date destination (those chairs really are very comfortable) but it’s also a nice joint to just hang out with friends, and attracts a friendly, mixed crowd, as it still seems somewhat under the tourist radar. This is a venue where the mixology is very much to the fore. The menu offers whisky flights alongside inventive house cocktails and though the cocktails aren’t cheap (can you find cheap cocktails in Paris?) they’re well put together and the bar tenders are always happy to make recommendations (apparently they’re very good looking, too we couldn’t possibly comment, you’ll just have to go see for yourself). Good looking servers or not, this is a bar to catch new bartending talent on the rise. It’s hip but not overly or intimidatingly so; there are DJs at the weekends and the menu of intriguing small plates and sharing platters sets it apart from some of the more generic bars in the neighbouring area. It’s only open evenings (from 6pm – 2am Tuesday to Saturday, from 8 Mondays) so alas it’s not an option for a cheeky lunchtime tipple, but it’s certainly a great place for a cool night out.
