Located in an only-marginally-more-salubrious-than-it-was bit of Pigalle, the former sex shop district of the city, Marlusse et Lapin is a deliciously idiosyncratic bar.

Located in an only-marginally-more-salubrious-than-it-was bit of Pigalle, the former sex shop district of the city, Marlusse et Lapin is a deliciously idiosyncratic bar. It has a kind of boho atmosphere which feels like a throwback to the area’s rich artistic history, full of louche locals drawn by the prospect of after-hours drinking and absinthe-sipping (as well as some very reasonable prices). The bar is tiny but with a kind of grandma vibe, all old-school flowered wallpaper, black-and-white photos, even an old bed which now doubles as a banquette. There are vintage telephones, lamps and even sewing machines dotted about the place. It’s an absolute delight and full of character. Its size and appeal means that it can get pretty rammed and you might want to avoid busy times if you want to stand a chance of having a conversation. There’s a great range of drinks but it’s the side-serving of character that makes this a favourite with so many people.
