Perched high up in Montmartre, in
the hip Abbesses neighbourhood, Studio 28 is a near-mythical movie-house, one
of the most famous art house cinemas in the city, dating back to 1928. Over the
years it has featured a roster of avant-garde films and was a favorite of
legendary figures like Jean Cocteau. Charlie Chaplin, Luis Buñuel, and Franck
Capra have also put in an appearance here. The place is steeped in nostalgia
but also feels alive – it’s no museum – we are particularly taken with its
romantic little teahouse and garden bar with its monochrome walls of French
movie stars past, Delon and Bardot, Signoret and Montand, making this the
perfect place to enjoy post-film cocktails and a spot of intellectual
interaction. All very Parisian. There are few places to match it in terms of
atmosphere – and the drinks are pretty decent too. Pleasant by day it grows
livelier by night when Paris’ cinephiles come out in force.
