The bar of hip new restaurant the Professore is worth a visit in its own right. This new venture from the guy behind the liquid offerings at the popular Grazie pizzeria is another lively Italian eatery with cocktails that punch well above their weight. The bar part of operation is out the back and is a cosy space full of wingback armchairs and old Turkey carpets which exudes a library vibe. The walls are lined with old books not to mention a selection of impressive bottles. It’s large enough to get a seat even at busy times but not too cavernous. Cocktails are creative as you’d expect from a bar of this pedigree and there are some really inventive and unusual touches such as their perfume-like sprays. The Acapulco Breeze pair rye with grapefruit, while the Spicy Gimlet mixes Beefeater gin with white pepper, cardamom and lime. There’s even a hot cocktail to ward off winter chills, Le Dernier Hiver de Vesper, the classic James Bond cocktail given a festive twist with cinnamon and star anise. There are Italian style nibbles to much if you’re hungry and, overall, it’s a stylish and sexy space, even if the service can be a little chilly. The adjoining restaurant is also well worth checking out.
